Good by 2008 and Welcome 2009

2008 was year of turmoil and future of 2009 seems to be already gloom. The recession is the biggest thing which is pinching the expectations.

India saw a series of terrorist attacks in major cities, last and biggest one in Mumbai the commercial capital of India. The stock markets crashed in early part of 2008 and there is no hope of recovery in 2009 at least. Inflation, failure on economic front, internal security problems are the most hurting things as far as India is concerned.

World saw advent of recession in USA and effects of that on world economics. United States got a new president in the name of Barack Obama. Memories of Osama Bin Laden are still lingering on the horizon.

Still as they say 'Hope dies last'. On that positive note let's wish everybody 'A Very happy and Prosperous New Year'.

Hindukush Mountain - How it was named

Western Afghanistan comprising the provinces of Herat , Kandahar was ruled by Sabuktagin a Muslim ruler from a town named Ghazni. He was facing Raja Jaya Pala who ruled from Kubha (modern Kabul) in Eastern Afghanistan. His kingdom comprised the provinces of Kapisa on the western side of the Hindu Kush Ranges and Punjab on the Eastern side.

The year 980C.E. marks the beginning of the Muslim invasion into India proper when Sabuktagin attacked Raja Jaya Pal in Afghanistan. In 980 C.E. Afghanistan was also a place where the people were Hindus and Buddhists. The name "Afghanistan" comes from "Upa-Gana-stan" which means in Sanskrit "The place inhabited by allied tribes". This was the place from where Gandhari of the Mahabharat came from Gandhar whose king was Shakuni. The Pakthoons are descendants of the Paktha tribe mentioned in Vedic literature. Till the year 980 C.E., this area was a Hindu majority area, till Sabuktagin from Ghazni invaded it and displaced the ruling Hindu king - Jaya Pal Shahi.

The victory of Sabuktagin pushed the frontiers of the Hindu kingdom of the Shahis from Kabul to behind the Hindu Kush mountains. Hindu Kush is literally "killer of Hindus" - a name given by Mahmud Ghazni to describe the number of Hindus who died on their way into Afghanistan to a life of captivity. After this setback, the Shahis shifted their capital from Kubha (Kabul) to Udbhandapura (modern Und in NWFP). Sabuktagin's son Mahmud Ghazni, kept up the attacks on the Shahis and captured Und. Subsequently, the Shahis moved their capital to Lahore and later to Kangra in Himachal.

I vote nobody

As per the 1969 act, in section "49-O" a person can go to the polling booth, confirm his identity, get his finger marked and convey the presiding election officer that he doesn't want to vote for anyone. Yes such a feature is available, but obviously these seemingly notorious leaders have never disclosed it. This is called "49-O".

Why should you go and say "I VOTE NOBODY"?

Because, in a ward, if a candidate wins, say by 123 votes, and that particular ward has received "49-O" votes more than 123, then that polling will be cancelled and will have to be re-polled. Not only that, but the candidature of the contestants will be removed and they cannot contest the re-polling, since people had already expressed their decision on them. This would bring fear into parties and hence look for genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way, of our whole political system... it is seemingly surprising why the election commission has not revealed such a feature to the public....Please spread this news to as many as you know... Seems to be a wonderful weapon against corrupt parties in India... show your power, expressing your desire not to vote for anybody, is even more powerful than voting... so don't miss your chance. So either vote, or vote not to vote (vote 49-O) and pass this info on..."Please forward this mail to as many as possible, so that we, the people of India , can really use this power to save our nation". Use your voting right for a better INDIA

Terrorist wiped out of Mumbai

Joint effort by the security forces, army, navy and NSG (National Security Guards) has ended the 59 hours terrorist reins in Mumbai hotspots. First to cleared of terrorist menace was Oberoi Trident hotels, next the Napien House in Colaba and final one is Taj Hotel.

More than 150 civilian life losses and killing 10 terrorist with arrest of one live is the end result. Loss to the property and business is yet to ascertain, as the NSG is yet to sanitize the last building terrorists hold. Some nine foreign nationals are also victim of the carnage that shattered the nerve of business community who frequent these top five star hotels.

NSG lost Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a brave soldier and Gajendra Singh another one in Napien House storming incident. The Maharashtra ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, Salaskar and Kamte are victim of inexperience of such situations. Mumbai police are exposed with their inadequate preparedness. The central and state government as usual has issued statements, which are just political, nothing concrete will come out of it. The UPA government in centre has been breeding the terrorism with lack of clear cut policies and minority appeasement policies of congress party. Which is costing dearer to the Nation.

If the stories in media are to believed the terrorists planned this act for more than six months in Karachi and apparently have ground support of dreaded gangster/don Dawood Ibrahim now hiding in Karachi, Pakistan. The quantity of ammunition and planning into the act shows how professional these peoples are getting day by day.

Terrorist attacks in Mumbai

Deccan mujahideen, a apparently Pakistan based terrorist outfit attacked Indian finance capital Mumbai yesterday. The attacks were carried on five star hotels in business district of Mumbai and suburban and long distance rail terminus. More than 130 peoples are dead and about 300 peoples injured in these attacks. Two taxis blasted in Mazgaon and Vileparle.

More than two dozen terrorist seems to be operating in these attacks, of which nine were killed by security persons. Forces lost 14 peoples including top cops, Hemant Karkare, Chief of ATS and Vijay Salaskar of ATS and ACP Ashok Kamte along with Sub-Inspector Shashank Shinde who was deputed at Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus when terrorists started indiscriminate firing.

Media reports suggest that terrorists made a base in Nariman House, a Jewish residential complex in Colaba in south Mumbai. Two hotels where they are hiding are Taj at Gateway of India, and Oberoi Hotels at Narimon Point targeting foreigners mainly from US and EU countries.

Solar cells with 100% efficiency

Researchers at Ohio State University have accidentally discovered a new solar cell material capable of absorbing all of the sun's visible light energy. The material is comprised of a hybrid of plastics, molybdenum and titanium. The team discovered it not only fluoresces (as most solar cells do), but also phosphoresces. Electrons in a phosphorescent state remain at a place where they can be "siphoned off" as electricity over 7 million times longer than those generated in a fluorescent state. This combination of materials also utilizes the entire visible spectrum of light energy, translating into a theoretical potential of almost 100% efficiency. Commercial products are still years away, but this foundational work may well pave the way for a truly renewable form of clean, global energy.

Tata Nano not from Singur that is for sure

Ratan Tata made it clear that he is out off Singur now. In a press conference on last Friday he blamed it squarely on agitation by Mamata Banerjee for the decision.

At the hindsight it is culture of agitation which is cultivated by left parties in last 30 years has brought the situation to this end. It is easy to blame Mamata Banerjee, but detailed analysis will not warrant exclusion of the role of Leftist government of West Bengal. The rallies and agitations at the cost of development is the popular culture has come to forefront in the entire episode. It is the failure of left government also, in creating a consensual environment on this record.

Mr Tata is keen on timely roll out of his dream project and he cetainly can't sit idle till the issue gets resolved within Mamata and Buddha. It is of course a setback for Tata Motors as they failed to gauge the ground realities at Singur. Now they are scouting for alternative sites, and hopefully they won't get into similar situation.

Upawasa or fasting in antiquity of India

Albiruni visited India in 10th century, in his Tarikh-e-Hind, describes about the various kind of fasting by Hindus, it is interesting to read it in this time.

Fasting is with the Hindus voluntary and supererogatory. Fasting is abstaining from food for a certain length of time, which may be different in duration and in the manner in which it is carried out.

Various methods of fasting.
The ordinary middle process, by which all the conditions of fasting are realised, is this: A man determines the day on which he will fast, and keeps in mind the name of that being whosebenevolence he wishes to gain thereby and for whose sake he will fast, be it a god, or an angel, or some other being. Then he proceeds, prepares (and takes) his food on the day before the fast-day at noon, cleans his teeth by rubbing, and fixes his thoughts on the fasting of the following day. From that moment he abstains from food. On the morning of the fast-day he again rubs his teeth, washes himself, and performs the duties of the day. He takes water in his hand, and sprinkles it into all four directions, he pronounces with his tongue the name of the deity for whom he fasts, and remains in this condition till the day after the fast-day. After the sun has risen, he is at liberty to break the fast at that moment if he likes, or, if he prefers, he may postpone it till noon.

This kind is called upavˆasa, i.e. the fasting; for the not-eating from one noon to the following is called ekanakta, not fasting. Another kind, called kr. icchra, is this: A man takes his food on some day at noon, and on the following day in the evening. On the third day he eats nothing except what by chance is given him without his asking for it. On the fourth day he fasts. Another kind, called parˆaka, is this: A man takes his food at noon on three consecutive days. Then be transfers his eating-hour to the evening during three further consecutive days. Then he fasts uninterruptedly
during three consecutive days without breaking fast. Another kind, called candrˆayan. a, is this: A man fasts on the day of full moon; on the following day he takes only a mouthful, on the third day he takes double this amount, on the fourth day the threefold of it , going on thus. till the day of new moon. On that day he fasts; on the following days he again diminishes his food by one mouthful a day, till he again fasts on the day of full moon. Another kind, called mˆasavˆasa (mˆasopavasa), is this: A man uninterruptedly fasts all the days of a month without ever breaking fast.

Reward of the fasting in the single months.
The Hindus explain accurately what reward the latter fasting in every single month will bring to a man for a new life of his after he has died. They say: If a man fasts all the days of Caitra, he obtains wealth and joy over the nobility of his children.

If he fasts Vai´sˆakha, he will be a lord over his tribe and great in his army.
If he fasts Jyaisht.
ha, he will be a favourite of the women.
If he fasts ˆAshˆad. ha, he will obtain wealth.
If he fasts ´Srˆavan. a, he obtains wisdom.
If he fasts Bhˆadrapada, he obtains health and valour, riches and cattle.
If he fasts ˆA´svayuja, he will always be victorious over his enemies.
If he fasts Kˆarttika, he will be grand in the eyes of people and will obtain his wishes.
If he fasts Mˆarga´sˆırsha, he will be born in the most beautiful and fertile country.
If he fasts Pausha, he obtains a high reputation.
If he fasts Mˆagha, he obtains innumerable wealth.
If he fasts Phˆalguna, he will be beloved.

He, however, who fasts during all the months of the year, only twelve times breaking the fast, will reside in paradise 10,000 years, and will thence return to life as the member of a noble, high, and respected family. The book Vishn. u-Dharma relates that Maitreyˆı, the wife of Yˆajnavalkya asked her husband what man is to do in order to save his children from calamities and bodily defects, upon which he answered: “If a man begins on the day Duvˆe, in the month Pausha, i.e. the second day of each of the two halves of the month, and fasts four consecutive days, washing himself on the first with water, on the second with sesame oil, on the third with galangale, and on the fourth with a mixture of various balms; if he further on each day gives alms and recites praises over the names of the angels; if he continue to do all this during each month till the end of the year, his children will in the following life be free from calamities and defects, and he will obtain what he wishes; for also Dilˆıpa, Dushyanta, and Yayˆati obtained their wishes for having acted thus.”

Girivan - a private hill station near Pune

Sahyadri mountain range in monsoon is enchanting. Last weekend we had a nice over night trip at private hill station in Sahyadri near Pune, aptly named Girivan. One of my colleague Mr. Shirambekar (call on 9820552621 for bookings) have a bungalow there and for his persistent invitation we decided to make it.

Girivan happens to be a hill station in Hotale village near Kolvan of Mulshi taluka of Pune district. Approximately at 2400 feets above sea level and 400 feet above the lonavala hill station, naturally the climate is cool and refreshing. Add to that the monsoon dimension of water falls around the hills and freshness of air.

This area as I learnt was private property of versatile marathi stage and television actor Vikram Gokhale and developed by his realty firm Sujata Farms of Pune. Being close to Pune (Paud Road is just 10 Km away), many week end picnickers thrive here. Public transport is dependent on State Transport buses till kolvan, so you need to hire a vehicle or take your own. The property is well developed and secured from all the sides with private security firms and maintenance staff.

The food, can be arranged from a restaurant in the complex and is good as well as affordable. The area near the restaurant is developed on the basis of theme park, with natural water fall to be developed for year around in near future.

Many houses can be availed for rent in Girivan with the help of developers and their housekeeping team at affordable rates.

A Upgraded Credit Card from ICICI Bank

Just got a upgraded credit card from ICICI bank. Infact it is co-branded card with Future Group, the Big Bazaar fame. They have upgraded me from Silver to Gold card. The process was like they send me a SMS and I reponded to that as acceptance and voila withing next ten days I receive a SMS from courier company about delivery of my new card. Things are getting simple these days, with ever reaching impact of internet and mobile communications.

Only glitch they have made is the letter accompanied talk about the card as add-on card upgrade, I didn't have any add-on card so far. Wife is happy with debit card. I have to check the repercussions about this.

As usual this one comes with lots of offers and rebates on purchases from the Future Group and allied marketeers. They are nothing but the allurements to customers to drop in at their store and get robbed over the period. Good thing is card is free for life time, and I shall try not to pay any interest or finance charges to the bank as possible by abiding to their payment rules. This takes some time to master, you have to keep your finances under control and remember the dates. Payments are done via net banking so you can schedule the payment for the last date.

Hanuman photograph. Real or fake ?

The photograph at left is of Lord Hanuman and taken by Manas Sarovar pilgrim. The story about its origin goes like

A group of people went to Manas-sarovar for a piligrimage trip. One of the person there is a Upasaka of Hanuman. He was exploring some caves and accidentally bounced upon a being looking like Lord Hanuman. All of them had cameras and this person happend to click the camera and died there for reasons not known. The other persons fished him out and the camera and here is the picture the camera showed. I do not know how much it is true but many people are believing it. It is a fact that Hanuman does exist in flesh and blood because he is a Chiranjeevi

Before believing this version, as with the Indian psyche, nobody tried to investigate and get the details about the person who took this snap and died because of it. It is not difficult to get the list of pilgrims for Manas Sarovar yatra as it should be documented in Government of India records and there will be very few are dead during the yatra.

If one looks at the picture, the image shows a old monkey like creature reading a book said to be Ramayana. If it is a real picture then I wonder the Chirinjeevi Hanuman is gettng old with age and typeface of Ramayana is very big with just six lines on a single page.

There is quite a chance that this photo is taken from hand drawn picture, as it lacks detailing.

If anybody who is reading this has any further information about this episode, please enlighten us about it. Till then enjoy the curiosity of Indian Mysticism.

Rainy nightmares

It is the repeating phenomena, during the monsoon on each high tide, if it rains around 200 mm in 24 hours you are sure to get an deluge, halting the local train operations and consequences.

July 1st was one of such day, it started raining previous night and continued till the afternoon, Central Railway stopped functioning. The high tide around 11am in the morning added to the woes as water logged could not be drained out for a period of more than three hours affecting the day to day activities of mumbaities.

Every monsoon the situation aggravates as the infrastructure of the mumbai is pressurized by the development and ever growing population of migrants. Political circles are busy talking constitute gives right to its citizen of settling where ever they want in India, but never think about this preposition. Now municipal commissioner Mr. Jairaj Phatak wants us to live with these problems as they are beyond control of municipal corporation. Irony is last week he announced 15% water cut as rain was not sufficient in june 2008.

Yamaha YZF R15 launched

After lot of speculations since the Delhi Auto Expo 2008 in January, Yamaha has finally launched it's flagship model in India. The stripped down model of R1, a 150 cc YZF R15. The power delivery of engine is stated to be around 17PS. Best part of the package according to Yamaha official is it has not compromised on the bike other than the engine. Rest of the parts are same on R1 to R15.

Priced at around Rs. 97000/-, much higher than the 20PS Bajaj Pulsar 220 and Hero Honda Karitzma, it is anybodies guess how much impact this one going to make in already crowded Indian two wheeler market. It should be costliest bike after Royal Enfield Bullets in the market.

Two american presidents and some coincidents

Have read it on a orkut community, don't know the facts are right or wrong.

Unbelievable Mystery
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.
And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

Indian Pincode going 8 digits soon

Postal Information Number, popularly known as PINCODE or ZIPCODE is revised to accommodate more information and it will cater to mohallas or beat in your locality. That means it will be easier for the postmen to find your address and your mails could reach you faster.

The new system will be pincode + 2 last two digits for the mohalla or beat in your pincode area.

Currently in India, Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6 digit code. There are 8 PIN regions in the country. The first digit indicates one of the regions. The first 2 digits together indicate the sub region or one of the postal circles. The first 3 digits together indicate a sorting / revenue district. The last 3 digits refer to the delivery Post Office.

Search pincode for a region here http://www.indiapost.gov.in/test/Pinsearch.aspx
Inflation in Indian State

Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is a celebrated economist and he says inflation can not be controlled. Add to that contradictory statements by the government like, 'opposition ruled state governments are not doing enough to contain inflation'.

Four years inflation has braked the backbone of common man and the state has failed improve the life quality of its citizens. Four year back the incumbent Congress party government came into power with the slogan 'Congress ka hath Garibon ke Sath', literally meaning we are for poor and the game they have played in last four years is certainly opposite of that theme.

I think the conclusion is very simple, a celebrated economist is not the answer to any countries economic woes. It needs vision and through understanding of the situation and a good team to address such problems.

A stunning example should be the Rail Ministry under notorious Laloo Prasad Yadav. Who couldn't do any thing for Bihar, but after getting a shocker in Bihar elections he is tried hard to improve his image by excellent performance in Rail Ministry. What he has done, is not magic but extending the support to a good team for good work in railways. That should be formula for other ministries and state functionaries.

Dealing with power shortage, Maharashtra way

Maharastra Energy Minister unveiled the plan to eliminate the power shortages in state in next five years. The most prominent figure in the plans seems to be the bill of Rs. 33000 crore.

Last ten years the congress government under Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh and the functionaries have done nothing for the power sector needs in the state. Barring mumbai the rest of maharastra is reeling under severe power shortages and is affecting the industry very badly.

But again, better late than never, in the election year government has tried to make for what they couldn't do in last ten years of their governance. The new plans will be supplanted by public private participation. If government plans are rightly implemented and planning bodies are right at projections then in 2012-13 state will have surplus energy.

Happy Gudi Padava

To uninitiated Gudi Padava is beginning of new year to Maharashtrians. It has similar relevance to Kannada and Telugu people also. It is known as Ugadi to those peoples.
Sindhi's also celebrate Cheti Chand on this day. It's the 1st day of new year that is Shuddha Pratipada(First day) of Chaitra Month according to Hindu calendar.

If you look at antiquity for this day, according to the Brahma Purana, on this day Brahma created the world after the deluge and time began to tick from this day forth. This is one of the 3 and a half days in the Indian Lunar calendar, whose every moment is considered auspicious.

Vandana from agra falls in a open borewell

Once again a small child falls in a abandoned bore well. Electronic media celebrated it to the full core. It's happening more frequently now a days since the first reported story of a boy Prince got lot of publicity and TV news channels broadcast it live and made huge money out of it. Then it became a more frequent practice, every now and then a child has to fall in to these abandoned wells and news channel cameramen are there to telecast it live.

But for all this nobody, even government/administration has bothered to punish the people who show negligence on their part in living the bore wells open. It seems it is well understood game plan of concerns to carry this game ahead.

MSRTC Timetable on net

Maharashtra Road Transport Corporations (MSRTC) timetable link is working now. They published its availability few months back, but some glitches and unprofessional approach from MSRTC honchos has delayed it so far. It is some what usable at the moment.

MSRTC buses or popularly known as ST (State Transport) buses and are only medium for large population for hinter areas in Maharashtra. Poor state of affairs of this state run business has always ensured poor quality of service. But with the pressure from private agencies although illegal ST services have started improving. They have started better buses and introduced new ventures like Mahabus on Mumbai-Pune route. Volvo buses are already running on this route. One wonders why the quality of service is only required on Mumbai-Pune stretch? Hope MSRTC extends this kind of service on other routes like Mumbai-Goa also.

Under performing Maharashtra Government

Hindustan Times news reports on Maharashtra Governments spending on financial allocation is eye opener. The incumbent congress government headed by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh should be the worst performer in years.

While farmers suicide is big issue and Central Government making a big farce out of it. The real necessity of performing at ground level and using resources at hand to the optimal level is ignored.

This callous approach is putting state into slump despite the good industrial environment and fiscal advantages at hand.

Raj Thakare's outburts about north indians and cities woes.

Raj Thakare's statements against north indians which now he claims quoted without context draw lot of flakes from eletronic media and English News papers. But the real issues about this city never got any highlights.

This city is certainly limited by resources as anyother place. Land, air, water the basic needs of humans are limited so does the sewage treatment. The density of population is alarmingly high. Public transport is collapsing. Public health is suffering because of high carbon deposits and lack of oxygen level in the air they breath. But for all this the English media with all their arrogance have only one point to discuss is that constitution has given right to stay anywhere in India.

If one have to travel by local trains of buses during any hours, he will experience the rot city is going through. Chief minister has never bothered about this cities problems so does the central leadership. Elites in this city has secured a quality of life by limiting south mumbai for their needs, you will have flyovers, wide roads, sea links, metros and what not, but suburbs are never in their plans.

This situation itself is pathetic, the arguments placed by so called activists are rather emotional and lack sincerity. Politician do play to the audience but what about these people who claim they are beyond politics but do the same.
Mumbai temperature drops to 9 degree Celsius

This February Mumbai reached a record low temperature of 9 Degree Celsius. Met department says that it was recorded that low after 1962, that means after 40 odd years. Normally Mumbai doesn't feel any chill of winter, and winter ware or woolen garments are rarely required. But this time everybody needed to dig out the sweaters or jackets, retailers doing good business.

Now people say summer will be equally extreme and it will be difficult to stay in Mumbai.
