India launched its first nuclear powered submarine in a ceremony in southern port city of Vishakhapatnam on Sunday the 26th July 2009, getting in the league of just six nations in the world to have successfully built one.
Indian military officials said the submarine would be capable of carrying nuclear weapons, however Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who attended the ceremony, said that the it was not built to threaten India’s neighbors.
The 367-foot Arihant, which means “destroyer of enemies” in Hindi, is part of a broad effort by the Indian government to create a military strength that matches India’s rising global stature.
The Arihant is the product of Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project. It is part of India's $3 billion plan to build five submarines and complete what it calls a "triad" of nuclear weapon launch capability - from air, land and sea. India is concurrently developing the K-15 ballistic missile, which can be nuclear-tipped and launched from submarines.

Bus service from Belapur to Bandra west.
Good news for Mumbai and Navi Mumbai residents. NMMT the transport arm of Navi Mumbai Municiple corporation (NMMC) has strated bus service from Belapur to Bandra from today. Initially, 20 buses will ply on this route out of which 10 will be Air Conditioned. The normal bus fare will be Rs. 22 and AC bus fare Rs. 45.
Service will be extended to Seepz in near future.
The main stops apart from Belapur and Bandra will be Uran Phata, DY Patil, Vashi bus depot, Deonar Depot, Suman Nagar and Mohammed Rafi Chowk.

Mumbai Local train timetable
This is for the local or suburban train travelers in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.Sindhunagar.com has a good online timetable for the routes Central line, Harbour Line and Thane-Vashi route in Navi Mumbai. It is search base timetable for time window which results the trains in a certain time windows for starting and destination railway stations.

Rainy nightmares
It is the repeating phenomena, during the monsoon on each high tide, if it rains around 200 mm in 24 hours you are sure to get an deluge, halting the local train operations and consequences.
July 1st was one of such day, it started raining previous night and continued till the afternoon, Central Railway stopped functioning. The high tide around 11am in the morning added to the woes as water logged could not be drained out for a period of more than three hours affecting the day to day activities of mumbaities.
Every monsoon the situation aggravates as the infrastructure of the mumbai is pressurized by the development and ever growing population of migrants. Political circles are busy talking constitute gives right to its citizen of settling where ever they want in India, but never think about this preposition. Now municipal commissioner Mr. Jairaj Phatak wants us to live with these problems as they are beyond control of municipal corporation. Irony is last week he announced 15% water cut as rain was not sufficient in june 2008.

Indian Pincode going 8 digits soon
Postal Information Number, popularly known as PINCODE or ZIPCODE is revised to accommodate more information and it will cater to mohallas or beat in your locality. That means it will be easier for the postmen to find your address and your mails could reach you faster.
The new system will be pincode + 2 last two digits for the mohalla or beat in your pincode area.
Currently in India, Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6 digit code. There are 8 PIN regions in the country. The first digit indicates one of the regions. The first 2 digits together indicate the sub region or one of the postal circles. The first 3 digits together indicate a sorting / revenue district. The last 3 digits refer to the delivery Post Office.

Dealing with power shortage, Maharashtra way
Maharastra Energy Minister unveiled the plan to eliminate the power shortages in state in next five years. The most prominent figure in the plans seems to be the bill of Rs. 33000 crore.
Last ten years the congress government under Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh and the functionaries have done nothing for the power sector needs in the state. Barring mumbai the rest of maharastra is reeling under severe power shortages and is affecting the industry very badly.
But again, better late than never, in the election year government has tried to make for what they couldn't do in last ten years of their governance. The new plans will be supplanted by public private participation. If government plans are rightly implemented and planning bodies are right at projections then in 2012-13 state will have surplus energy.

MSRTC Timetable on net
Maharashtra Road Transport Corporations (MSRTC) timetable link is working now. They published its availability few months back, but some glitches and unprofessional approach from MSRTC honchos has delayed it so far. It is some what usable at the moment.
MSRTC buses or popularly known as ST (State Transport) buses and are only medium for large population for hinter areas in Maharashtra. Poor state of affairs of this state run business has always ensured poor quality of service. But with the pressure from private agencies although illegal ST services have started improving. They have started better buses and introduced new ventures like Mahabus on Mumbai-Pune route. Volvo buses are already running on this route. One wonders why the quality of service is only required on Mumbai-Pune stretch? Hope MSRTC extends this kind of service on other routes like Mumbai-Goa also.

Indian Railways going Wi-Fi
Indian Railways has great plans for the netizons. To keep you connected to the world and your office, IR is planning WI-FI in select trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani. Trains connecting metro cities will be in the plan for first phase.
Just to make it more attractive Railways are planning to make select railway stations wi-fi ready, so that you can work with your laptops while waiting for trains arrivals.
In the first phase more than 50 railway stations will be wi-fi ready.
The Railways would also set up local area network (LAN) to provide Wi-Fi connectivity within stations. The Railways have extensively computerised their operations to deal with administration and ticketing. Work of upgradation of OFC network to high bandwidth STM-16 network is in full swing and has already been commissioned on all important routes. RailTel has also been asked to provide cyber Cafes at 82 stations on Indian Railways out of which cyber cafes at 24 stations have already been commissioned.

Mumbai to Pune in one Hour
If the Railways and Maharashtra Chief Minister's plans go right, it is possible to travel Mumbai to Pune in just one hour. A kind of Bullet train journey on the lines of Japanese railway. The train will be travelling at the speed of 200KM/Hour almost at the speed of Japanese Bullet train.
But costs are high for the new tracks it is Rs. 20 crore per kilometer or for the upgrade of old track it is Rs. 4 Crore per kilometer.

Konkan Railway services
Just back from my native place, a small village in konkan. It is quite relaxing making a small visit to the place. Konkan railway is a boon traveling in this part of world, as traveling via road is tough, being a hill area bus travel is not comfortable. But the trains are always crowded and konkan railway management and those who are responsible for the services are not that efficient to manage the crowds. They are always late in responding.
They have a holiday special for the occasions, but the festive mood in mumbai based konkanis is so over whelming and add to that the ever growing tourist influx towards Goa.
It is just not understandable that, the Konkan Railway who boasts fantastic growth in revenue this year, responds so slow to the infrastructure and service augmentation. They should make the holiday special is regular service on the route and take the task of improving the infrastructure along with.

Smart Card Bus Pass for BEST buses introduced
BEST undertaking of Mumbai has started smart card based bus pass. Pass is available for seven days, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly period. Tariffs will be based on number of kilometers one travels. There are concessions for senior citizens and school children.
This pass will be issued at authorized centers from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm in advance or on the day of travel. Pass will be issued to commuter on demand between any two valid destinations of his choice limited to maximum distance of 15 km. Any number of travel patterns are allowed within that distance limitations.
One time administration fee of Rs. 10 will be charged at the time of issuing the pass. Identity card is required for issuing the pass and can be purchased at Rs. 2 at any authorized center.

Navi Mumbai Development Plan
The City Development Plan (CDP) unveiled by Navi Mumbai Municiple Corporation (NMMC) under the centers Jawaharlal Nehru (Another mission in Nehru's name) urban renewal mission embarks on Rs. 2600 Crores project to develop city and neighboring areas infrastructure.
Plan has been formulated to meet the growth of city from current population of 1 million to 2.5 million in coming years. It is developed in focusing the transportation, infrastructure and land use of the so called 21st century city of Navi Mumbai
Funding will be done by center (50%), state (20%) and remaining through financial instruments.
Connectivity between the two cities Mumbai and Navi Mumbai will be in focus.

Hi-tech Road Infrastructure for Mumbai
The World Bank will release Rs 55 crore under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (phase II) to revamp the city's traffic system.
This amount will be provided to implement an Automatic Traffic Control system that would use sensors to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. It will also cut the waiting time at junctions to less than a minute. Installing the system across 253 major traffic junctions will cost Rs 55 crore, or approximately Rs 2 lakh per junction.
How it works
Sensors would be embedded on roads to detect the number of vehicles on it.
"These state-of-the-art detectors will ascertain the number of vehicles lined up and transmit a message for a signal change when the number crosses a specified limit," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Satish Mathur.
The sensors will relay the message to the signal controller who will, depending upon the area, transmit it to one of the two central computers at the BMC headquarters at CST or the traffic police hub at Worli. The central servers will transmit messages back to ensure a smooth traffic flow.
Currently, timers control traffic movement at junctions.
Special preference
Police vehicles, ambulances, fire brigade tenders and even BEST buses will be privileged vehicles under the new system. These vehicles will be fitted with special chips that would beam a message to the road sensors, which in turn will transmit it to a central computer. This will ensure a minimum waiting time for the vehicle.
Who will benefit?
Initially, only 53 of the 253 traffic junctions will be installed with the hi-tech device. Some areas currently identified include CST, Churchgate, Mahim Causeway, Siddhivinayak temple-Prabhadevi crossing, Dadar TT, Turner Road, Kalanagar-Bandra junction, Centaur Hotel junction, Western Express Highway and Andheri Station-SV Road crossing. In the Eastern suburbs, the ATC system will be implemented at Powai junction, LBS-Wadia, Chembur Railway Station, Govandi Road and the Mankhurd-Charkhop link road.
